Stalagmites is an aptly named group, when you think about it. Their sound is something that’s been wrought over time, it feels deliberate and exact and—somehow—natural. Their first EP, Be An Animal, is a strong exercise in old rock traditions. The lead singers voice ranges somewhere between Bono and a young Ozzy Osborne. It’s melodic and liquid and something like magic. “Be An Animal,” the opening track, reminds the listener of a time when rock groups were held in the same mythical zeitgeist as old Greek Gods. They’re something big, something ancient, something unique. Most importantly, of course, is the fact that Stalagmites maintain the feeling of something new.
