The Above Average YouTube channel launched a new series called Sugar Boy earlier this week. For those of you who don’t know, Above Average is a new project from the people at Broadway Video. They produce short form comedy, including actors and writers from Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, The Lonely Island, and the rest of the Internet. I found Above Average when I found Model Wife, and I’ve been pretty impressed. Their shorts tend to lean towards the absurd, that kind of comedy that comedians like.
Sugar Boy fits that idea. It’s about a little boy who, as fate would have it, has had too much sugar and then tells a story. It’s very similar to the idea behind Axe Cop, where 29-year-old comic book artist Ethan Nicole illustrates a story written by his 5-year-old brother, Malachi.
The result is endearing, if not pointedly awkward. Sugar Boy often puts naked ladies and boners into his story as plot twists. One of the naked ladies, speaking of, is played by SNL regular Vanessa Bayer. Sure, she doesn’t do much more than smile, but she’s perfected the “intentionally oblivious” glare that’s made her Miley Cyrus sketch one of my favorites.
All of Above Average’s videos are worth checking out. A good place to start is the first (and hopefully not last) episode of Sugar Boy.
